More than a Meal

This year, the homeless community and anyone less fortunate will benefit from a hot meal courtesy of Bridgeport’s Funchal Cafe. The State Street location just opened this fall but is giving back to the community with the event. Valerio Fernandes, the restaurant owner and manager, uses this as a way to “thank everybody.”

“I believe in Bridgeport, We are Bridgeport. Everything is about the community,” he says.

The team at Funchal is prepared to serve 500 take out dishes between 3 to 5 pm. this Wednesday, November 25th.

“If we have to extend, we will go beyond the system,” he says.

300 people have already claimed a ticket for the free meal. The meal Funchal is serving consists of the typical Thanksgiving favorites such as turkey, stuffing, and mashed potatoes.

Fernandes admits hosting something like this is costly but it pays back. “I don’t want to support another state. I want to do everything for Bridgeport.”

There is one chance to make things happen, and be a force for change, according to Fernandes. He believes that since the cafe is successful there is no reason they shouldn’t reach out to the community.

“We are here to make people happy,” he says.

Since opening, Funchal Cafe’s second location quickly became a local favorite. Businessmen, high schoolers, law enforcement, and construction workers enjoy tasty paninis, sushi, and coffee. Housatonic students love it especially because they receive a 10% discount on their orders. Seating is available inside and out, with cozy nooks and crannies to boot. There is even free WiFi available.

“This is something good we want to do,” Fernandes says.

Hopefully this turns into an annual event so more will be inspired to help out and receive help as well.

Funchal is open from 7 A.M. to 4 P.M. Monday through Friday, and Saturday from 9 A.M. to 3 P.M.
